Is It Time For a Career Change?

Is It Time For a Career Change?

Is it time for a career change?

Like, me, you’d probably never imagined what life might be like in ten, fifteen, or even twenty years.  It’s safe to assume that most of us [including me at one time!] just keep coasting along from month to month never really thinking what the world will be like.  Think about the Back to The Future moment that went viral on social media not that long ago on 21st October 2015.  Whilst some of the ideas of how 2015 ‘might look’ were a little bit way off, some it was actually pretty accurate.  The digital age is here and if we think about the wonders of technology that we have right now, think about what it will be like in just a few years’ time.  The mind boggles …!

This made me think …

Only a short time ago, I came to a crossroads and made myself think about my life and how the rise of the supercomputer / robots could affect not only how I earn money but also how people like you would manage.  We all know that there is no such thing as ‘A Job For Life’ but how many of us actually take steps to protect ourselves financially?  There’s a difference between driving a great car [probably on credit] or having membership at an exclusive gym [that we never really use anyway] to really knowing that you have proper financial security when that much quoted ‘rainy day’ comes along.

BBC News recently quoted the following: –

‘Boston Consulting Group predicts that by 2025, up to a quarter of jobs will be replaced by either smart software or robots, while a study from Oxford University has suggested that 35% of existing UK jobs are at risk of automation in the next 20 years’.

Super Computers really are taking over

IBM’s super computer even has a name – Watson.  It is able to offer advice to American Hospitals on a whole range of different cancers.  What’s more, Watson won’t ever get tired or ill or expect to be paid month after month  I qualified as a lawyer and twenty years ago I was safe in my assumption that this noble profession would look after me well throughout my life.  How wrong was I?!  Unlike Watson, I do get tired, I do get ill and yes, I do make human error.  To my complete astonishment, I have discovered that robotic lawyer software is now in existence and it can and definitely will improve as the years go by.  If Artificial Intelligence v Human Intelligence were competing with each other [like a football tournament] I know what I’d be putting my money on.  Think about it for a moment.  If mobile phones and laptops have become unrecognisable compared with what we had in the 1990s think about what is going to have happened in 2025 or 2035.  What we think is amazing today will be old news then.  Will that apply to you?

I took my head out of the sand

I have been extremely lucky and survived both redundancy crises [when I worked in the electronics’ components’ industry] and the recession whilst working as a lawyer.  No, it hasn’t been easy but yes, I did survive it and with some careful budgeting managed to keep my head above water.  Many people have not been so fortunate and lawyers in my local area who believed they ‘were set for life’ have been left scrabbling around for the crumbs on the table or taking jobs they don’t want to do just so they can pay the bills.

I really did begin to wonder how long my own run of luck would last.

What did I do?

So I took my head out of the sand and decided that I needed to change and make people like you aware that there is an alternative.  The alternative is leveraging the internet to give yourself not only freedom and a life you love but also an income too.  My passion is to lift the veil of ignorance and highlight that being a digital entrepreneur really can set you free.

I wish you every success for your digital future!
